We answered just three questions in this episode but they were seriously super-sized and jam packed with details! We talked about chicory, quinoa and CRP (what to do if it’s elevated) and sussed out the differences between functional and conventional thyroid lab ranges so you can know if you’re really low or normal thyroid. Discussed HPA axis dysregulation and the impact cortisol problems and stress have on fertility and covered several aspects of estrogen dominance including whether or not supplements to help with estrogen metabolism can lower estrogen too much. Finally, a favorite topic of Dr Brooke’s: the downside to long term DHEA supplementation. And finally within the DHEA question we covered several causes of swelling in hands and feet. These were great questions ladies, keep them coming!

She’s back and it’s not hard to see why she’s a fav guest of the show! Dr Krista Scott-Dixon of Stumptuous.com and Precision Nutrition has a new book that poses an interesting question: Why Me Want Eat? What drives us to eat certain things and why do we struggle to change certain food related behaviors?

While not all of us have experienced full blown, clinical eating disorders we are all members in one way or another of the Food & Eating & Body Image Issues Club. KSD explains why it’s not always easy to give up our membership card – even if we want to. There’s comfort, certainty and even a clinging to  our issues, our “stuff” and these are darn good reasons not to change. She points out that our stuff doesn’t always come at the hand of some Big T -  big trauma like abuse, injury or major loss. Many of us haven’t suffered a huge trauma but rather have dealt with the constant, small, emotional papercuts of life.   Either way, food, body image and exercise “stuff” is prevalent and Krista’s advice is always sound, slightly humorous and if followed allows us all to make change easier and make it stick.  We adore her, tune in to see why.

This episode touched on so many topics we’ve covered before - gut health, stress, ancestral eating - but never before have we done a deep dive into how all this affects our oral health. Holistic and functional dentist, TEDX speaker, About.com and MindBodyGreen contributor, Dr Steven Lin joins us with his amazing Aussie accent and shared some jaw dropping (pun intended) info on what we can do to have healthier gums and straighter, whiter teeth – and our kids too! We asked him to school us on mouth taping, toothpaste, canker sores and whether or not you can actually heal a cavity with a good Paleo diet. Fascinating stuff.

Learn more about Dr Linn here and look for his new book The Dental Diet out January 2018.

Great questions today! We answered a question that sooooo many women ask us about: fruit - yah or nah? We covered this from every angle: does it work for you, what your fruit cravings mean and how you utilize the fiber found in fruit. This also brought up the questions: is Paleo meant to be low carb? And how healthy are "natural sugars"? This show also dove deep into a reader's question on what to expect in terms of “should her progress be happening quicker”, inferno hot Pilates and what we mean when we say "strength training". Lastly we covered the Pill's impact on thyroid meds and talked all about acne including its causes and how you find your root cause.

We’ve covered what to eat for pretty much every hormone in your body thus far on this podcast but today we take a deep dive into food from a totally different angle. We eat food for a thousand different reasons beyond energy or even convenience and whether you’re experiencing full on binges or just find yourself comforting or rewarding with food often this episode is for you! Tricia shares her own story with emotional eating and her history of being overweight and how no amount of dieting or exercising fixed it because that wasn’t her root cause. She got to the bottom of why she overate and healed her deep down stuff and thus healed her relationship with food.

Tricia shares what she’s found in 30 years of doing this work to be the causes of emotional eating and why we turn to food: pain killer, escaping fear and punishment. Fascinating, especially that last one as so often we think of food as a treat or a reward. Great tools in this show that will help us all have a healthier relationship with food. Learn more about Tricia here.

Back today with a Q&A! We get sooooo many questions about birth control and whether they are “good or bad” for you. We dig in to the risks (i.e. stroke, clotting, inflammation, oxidative stress, nutrient deficiencies) and the impact on other hormones (progesterone, thyroid, gut health, ghrelin, etc.) and how you can know what’s best for you. As always, no judgement from us AT ALL! We aim in this show to give you all the options and talk about the stuff your prescriber often doesn’t as well as charge all of our listeners with educating young girls about their options.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the Pill in particular is that almost 60% of women are NOT using it solely for contraception but to manage other issues such as acne, heavy bleeding, irregular periods, PMS mood issues or headaches and we want you to know you have more options than the Pill! And in the case of these non-contraception issues the options are BETTER as the Pill will not treat any part of the underlying cause (great at symptom management in many cases but not the cause) and those issues are still there and often times worse after coming off the Pill.  Juicy conversation for sure! We also field a “what do I do when my kitchen is being renovated and I can’t cook for 3 months?” questions and how to start to wean a reluctant toddler.

As always, keep those questions coming to bettereverydaypodcast@gmail.com!  Follow us on Facebook  together or keep up with Dr Brooke here and Sarah here. Eeek! This was an informative episode to say the least but your palms may get a little sweaty listening to our guest discuss the impacts of EMFs or electromagnetic frequencies that are buzzing around all of us all the time. We discussed common sources of EMFs in our homes and workplaces, some very simple strategies to decrease their impact and we pondered what makes some of us more sensitive than others to these little buggers.

Dr Libby Darnell was our guest and she has developed an incredible expertise on this subject after fighting her own battle to win back her health that was deteriorating in part to her sensitivity to EMFs. This was fascinating information and it’s stuff so many of us are unaware of! Are EMFs driving us all to an early grave? Probably not, but they are affecting us and it’s something we can take actionable, doable steps towards decreasing to optimize our health and certainly something we may want to think of in chronic illnesses that don’t seem to be getting better.

So tune in and learn about grounding or earthing, why you shouldn’t work on a plugged in laptop or sleep next to a plugged in smart phone, safer travel tips, what the heck a Stetzer meter is and why you may want to stand on a piece of tinfoil for a minute after you run on the treadmill.  Seriously fascinating. Like always, knowing this stuff can easily freak us out! But this is the world we live in, we can’t possibly escape this entirely so you do as much as you can as often as you can. That’s how you “be better”.

Learn more about Dr Libby Darnell here and grab her free guide with 10 steps you can do to keep you and your family safe from EMFs. Such great info and easy to employ all of these without moving to a remote mountain village away from civilization!

No sugar coating in this episode, but it will change your life. So there’s that.

Change…hard right? We say we want X, Y or Z and have a thousand and one reasons why we can’t pull it off. We have excuses for days and a list of people and circumstances to blame: we have kids, our partner isn’t supportive, not enough time, not enough money, we’re too old, and on and on it goes. It’s always something or someone else that’s holding us back right? Well, today’s guest life coach, founder of the Handel Method and author of a new book, Lauren Zander is here to say, “Actually, maybe it’s you.”

Guess what: it is. And it’s us too. This is the human condition, the light and the dark, the good and the bad. When we face that, get honest, get brave enough to take responsibility for what we want and what’s not working in our lives, anything is possible. Lauren has such a unique approach and touches on all the stuff we are too scared to talk about: our heartfelt dreams, dishonesty (we are all a bunch of liars by the way, who knew??), getting clean with our parents and our past, tuning in to the crazy voices we listen to in our head and why we need to motivate with promises vs. rewards (this is revolutionary!). Grab her new book here, learn more about Lauren here and by all means drop everything and listen to this episode! We can’t wait to hear what changes for you.

We were due for a Q&A ladies and today's the day! We covered a question that comes in to us a hundred different ways: what testing should you get to assess your hormones? So we walked through the difference between blood/serum, saliva and urine testing, the pros and cons, accuracy and the most important part: is that test evaluating what you really need to know about? There was also a great question about spotting with ovulation so we gave a quick tutorial on interpreting menses and hormone related bleeding as well as reminding you all to always look past the ovaries when thinking about an estrogen-progesterone problem by evaluating stress, sleep, diet, and of course thyroid.  Finally we tackled a big, big question on lowering cholesterol without statin medications. Is a swap for a more natural cholesterol lowering supplement the way to go? Or is it part of a much bigger issue?

In this episode we have the Paleo Powerhouse behind Harder To Kill Radio and Stupid Easy Paleo, Ms. Steph Gaudreau.  Having long followed Steph’s fabulous recipes and generally bad-assery on her blog and social media, it was a treat to have her on the show talking about strength in a bigger sense including physical, mental and spiritual.  She is putting this message out into the world in a big, big way with her upcoming Women’s Strength Summit.  This is the second online event Steph’s done to pull together top experts not only on strength and fitness but also on empowerment, mindset and women’s health.  Join her for the summit here.

We also touched on a little something that happened on Instagram last weekend: body shaming. A post Steph put up of herself in the gym garnered some criticism of her own body and she bravely took the opportunity to have a tough conversation. You can read all about it on her blog but tune in here as well and hear what all three of us had to say about strength, criticism, owning your power and the responsibility we all have to help and inspire each other. In short, don’t miss this one!

Whoa mama are we ever still riding high after our three day retreat in Chico, CA last weekend! We not only finally got to be in the same state but the same house and share the same stage together but most importantly we got to be live, in person with YOU the women this podcast was for.  It was a weekend full of knowledge, connection and perspective shifts spent with our amazing speakers and the incredible women who attended. We are all dipping our toes into the hot water and getting out of our comfort zone, ya know, where all the growth happens, where it’s a bit messy and painful but of course worth it.

In this episode we recap the event for those who couldn’t be there and we share our opening talk: The 5 Pillars To A Bigger Better Life. This talk was born out of the need to help women have more energy and to sort out their health so they can be happier, to  set their priorities in a way that is in line with their true values and purpose and to finding their joy and live big.

You asked and we answered! In today’s Q&A we talked about getting pregnant while you’re breastfeeding (with a caveat for women with PCOS), taking cold showers for fat loss and wandered through all aspects of taking fish oil.

A theme today was doing stuff you hate for the sake of health or fat loss - is it worth it? Is there a better way? And how to take big picture information like a study on fish oil and apply that to your daily choices of what to eat and vitamins to take.

Few spots available for our retreat and it’s not too late to join us! Get more information at www.sarahfragoso.com or www.betterbydrbrooke.com.

Attention all mamas: we had integrative board certified pediatrician and mama herself, Dr Elisa Song, MD on the show! She shared with us her best evidence based tips for common childhood troubles ranging from fevers to earaches to sniffles. Dr Song gave us some great tips for products you can easily find over the counter to have on hand. As well as some hands on stuff like acupressure and essential oils to use when kiddos are sick and want to be held. So much power in actively helping them feel better!

We also touched on more chronic childhood issues like eczema, ADHD, autism and discussed the alarming rise in autoimmunity in children and what we can do about it. And perhaps our favorite part of the show was talking about how to help kids manage their stress - tough huh? Dr Song had some great tips and some excellent book suggestions:

  1. Maureen Garth’s series of meditation books for young children called Starbright, Moonbeam, Earthlight, and Sunshine are wonderful stories that teach relaxation through metaphor and visualization.
  2. The Goodnight Caterpillar: A children’s relaxation story by Lori Lite is a beautiful story of a girl who teaches a very anxious caterpillar how to slowly relax and unwind his legs, arms, body and mind, and teaches progressive relaxation to kids in a simple yet very effective way.
  3. Dreaming of Ponies by Lori Lite is available as an audio CD or MP3. Lori guides kids through meditations to learn progressive relaxation, breathing, and calming techniques for bedtime and everyday stress.
  4. Still Quiet Place: Mindfulness for young children and Still Quiet Place: Mindfulness for teens by Dr. Amy Saltzman, are available as audio CDs or MP3. Dr. Saltzman guides kids of all ages through various, short mindfulness exercises that are calming and easy to implement.
  5. What To Do When You Worry too Much by Dr. Dawn Huebner is a must read for any child to learn cognitive-behavioral techniques to use his brain to manage his worries.
  6. Julie Lythcott-Haims’ How to Raise an Adult and Jessica Lahey’s The Gift of Failure are must-reads for all parents raising today’s generation of children.

Holy guacamole was Lara an absolute WEALTH of information! She dropped all the non-toxic knowledge bombs on everything from parabens and phthalates to fire retardants to water filters. We talked about “green washing” and how some of our healthy products are actually not so much as well as how things like “BPA free” lead us to feel safer about that water bottle but what replaced the BPA can be as bad or even worse. Yikes, right?

But before we all freak out we can take Lara’s level headed approach to change what we can control instead of flipping out about what we can’t. We live in the modern world and this stuff is part of our life, but Lara talked us through a step by step way to start to make a difference in your environment, home and health.

Learn more about Lara here and you be bet she’ll be back on our show!

OK can we just say that Debra was an absolute delight to have on the show?? She provides such an empowering option to women frustrated with lack of results with dieting and exercise as hormones start to wane with perimenopause and menopause. Debra shares her midlife crisis story and how that helped her harness her background in Exercise Science and Exercise Psychology into a dedication to helping women that like her that found themselves at this crossroads where what used to work didn’t anymore, where stress all of a sudden became an even bigger deal and where women start to feel less at home in their bodies.

Of all the questions we receive, losing weight after menopause or during perimenopause by far rank at the top. Women simply have to do things differently during this time and we covered it from weights to walking to what to eat in this episode.

With finding our genetic mutations (or rather our genetic polymorphisms) just a click away these days, in this episode we interview leading epigenetic expert Dr. Ben Lynch, ND about what to do with this information.

One of the most common polymorphisms is MTHFR, hear Dr. Lynch tell us what this gene does, why it's becoming more common to have issues with it and just how big a deal it is if you have it. We discuss how genes are the computer and our lifestyle and environment are all the software, applications and "stuff" we load up on to our computer (great analogy Dr Ben!). So you can see where your power is to effect the hand you were dealt.

We ask Dr Lynch if everyone should run out and get a 23andme test and know all of their genetic issues, is the best thing to do when you have MTHFR to start taking "MTHFR approved supplements" like l-methyl-folate and the top three things we can all do to improve our home environment to help our genetics.

And stay tuned for Dr Lynch's new book out early 2018 called Dirty Genes. You can bet we're going to be grabbing it! Learn more about Dr Lynch here.

Today we’re back answering your questions and we kicked it off with a great one from a listener who like us is a working mama asking: how do you two do it all? Well, as you can imagine we shared the not so pretty behind the scenes look at how we juggle it all, how we dial it up in some areas and down in others (only to flip flop that next week) and where we get it right with food, sleep and exercise and where we still struggle.

Next we had big, meaty question about food allergies vs. sensitivities, the problem with elimination foods especially if you have a very reactive system and what to do when you’d rather just eat foods that bother your system because it just feels too dang hard to manage it all.  We spent over thirty minutes digging deep into this question because it touched on oh so much of what we know so many women struggle with.

And finally there are SPOTS STILL OPEN for our retreat! Get registered for this event because we CANNOT wait to see you in person in April. Details here.

People-pleasers, putting yourself lasters and anyone else needing to step into their power listen up:

"I am responsible for my intention, not the reception."

"Guilt is designed to reroute poor behavior but we often use it to compound bad behavior to avoid the bad feeling."

Just a few of the soul-shaking knowledge bombs dropped by our amazing guest, Amy Smith AKA the Joy Junkie on this week's episode. Holy smokes was this a great show!

You'll want to have a notebook handy to nab all the practical and amazing advice Amy shared today. And in effort to show up authentically there were a few less than G rated words uttered in this podcast but it was a powerful show you absolutely won't want to miss.

Sometimes it’s all going well – great actually – and then the bottom falls out….

Sometimes it falls way out. Everything you’ve built, all you’ve worked for, how you’ve defined yourself slips away and you’re left to clean up the mess.  Many of us have been there, some of us have crumbled under the weight of it and had to dig ourselves out down the road. With our adrenals shot, our relationships in shambles and questioning who we even are now.

Having survived just such a situation with her marriage intact, children thriving and with the strength to rebuild it all, Michele tells us exactly how she did it.  When her business fell apart, her home was lost and her health was slipping away, Michele decided to be stronger than the storm swirling around her. In this episode, she shares with us the exact tools she used and what would become her new book.
