Amidst polarizing, conflicting, and often alarming health and hormone information, The Dr Brooke Show is a voice of sanity where a sensible and nuanced take is honored. Black-and-white thinking, complex daily routines, and hormone advice that get you lost in minutia are not welcome here, but you are. With your host Dr Brooke Kalanick, functional medicine doctor and female hormone expert, you’ll sift through the nonsense and get to what matters most for your hormones and your happiness. Deep dive with expert interviews as well as Dr. Brooke’s solo episodes will give you the solutions you need. Dr Brooke is a speaker, author, and unlike most online experts: still a doc in full-time practice working with real women every day. Like you, she is navigating the moving target that is female hormones through the years and trying to live life more like interval training vs. a marathon: work hard but also recover, learning when to have more grit or when to have more grace. Oh, and also trying not to give her kids too much to talk about in therapy someday. Her promise to you is at least one actionable takeaway from each episode to help you BETTER today. Nervous system regulation is all the rage and it is so important to so many symptoms and health conditions. When you have an overactive and highly sensitive system, it might not be enough to take a deep breath or trigger your vagus nerve with singing or cold water. Those tools are powerful and you should know how to use them but for many of us the ultimate root cause of mast cell activation, autoimmunity, chronic issues like long covid, POTS, etc. is deeper trauma that created a lack of safety and we need to address that before gut health, hormone balance, or other triggers can be safely dealt with. Whether you are cycling and have symptoms or are on HRT and having issues, the ratio of these two hormones can be a real indicator of issues like low progesterone, estrogen dominance or estrogen metabolism issues. You can calculate this ratio from values on your serum testing or urine testing such as the DUTCH test. In this episode, I talk about what this ratio should be, how to calculate it (units matter!), what you can glean from various types of testing (i.e. urine shows you something different than serum, both matter) and what to consider to feel better if your P:E2 ratio is off.
