I get asked this question almost more than anything, still after close to 20 years doing this work. When it comes to snacks and what makes a good one, we need to be clear on why we are snacking. Is it habit or boredom or necessary cuz we can’t maintain our energy and blood sugar levels? What do we need to accomplish with a snack: fuel, workout recovery, more protein? I’m just gonna come right out and say it: I stink at accepting help from others. I also know, I’m not alone in that! It can bring up feelings of guilt that we can’t do it all ourselves, an uncomfortable sense of “I don’t deserve help” or “I don’t want to put anyone out” or even “I don’t want to owe anyone anything".
However, when we don’t accept help from others we are furthering our mistrust that we can be cared for by others safely and we are denying those that love us the chance to boost their oxytocin and give to us. I get asked this question daily, both in my practice and in my online community. It’s a great question because it seems like the perfect answer to alleviate digestive symptoms, skin troubles, low energy, blood sugar and hormone problems right? Just take a test and tell me what to eat! I get it and they can be really helpful BUT there are a ton of problems with these tests.
You need to know what type of reaction you’re actually testing (allergy vs. sensitivity), the labs need to be using the proper methodology (hint: most of them are not), they can’t test for every type of food reaction (i.e.bloating can be caused by a gut infection, low HCL or a food sensitivity and only one of those will show up on a test) AND you need to understand where food sensitivities fit in your overall treatment plan. Food Issues do cause a host of inflammatory issues but they are often a symptom and not a root cause so just “getting your food sensitivities” checked and get off that food forever isn’t usually the best approach.

Holy smokes y’all, my life got turned totally sideways the past few days and it’s been a true test of all the tools I’ve been teaching you all. It’s been tough, I’ve had moments of nothing but tears. I’ve doubted it all. I also found hope.
And most importantly, I got through. Now I want to share it all with you.
What I learned was that practicing mindfulness and stress skills is like working out, when you’re doing it it’s always super hard but it’s never as hard as the first day. We all have to put in our reps.

My space profoundly impacts my mood and emotional state so of course I think of creating my space as a major part of my overall health and hormone balance. In this episode I talk about why I’m such an advocate for both strength training for women - and it’s not just about body composition and preventing osteoporosis. Muscle mass is your metabolism to a large degree and it’s a key player as an endocrine and immune organ. You read that right! Muscles make hormones called myokines that have a huge impact in systemic inflammation thus are key to your overall health and hormone balance.
But how about if you’re wanting to lose body fat, should you be focusing on cardio or weights? While cardio does burn fat during your session it’s a lot more complicated than that so I cover how to strike a balance but most importantly why you can’t rely on exercise alone for fat loss. We must get rid of the idea that exercise can simply just “burn it off”.
Lastly, I cover the barriers we have to lifting weights be it know how, logistics or of course: not enough time!
