Women today are becoming more aware of the value of both strength training and HRT on their bone health. Most screening, though, takes place much later and often when osteoporosis and osteopenia have already set in. In this episode, I challenge the ideas that bone loss is only a symptom of osteoporosis, we simply need to take more calcium to build bone, and that HRT alone - or even strength training alone - are all we need to think about when it comes to protecting and rebuilding our bones. Other hormones like cortisol and thyroid, oxidative stress and inflammation, and other nutrients like protein, fiber, magnesium, and vitamin D are all crucial to address as well. In this episode, I am asking a question I get daily in my practice from women taking HRT: do I need to be cycling my progesterone? Or is OK to just take it every day? How about estrogen, does that need to be cycled too? It’s a good question and one that experts do not agree on. As I always say though, HRT can’t be one size fits all and it’s worth understanding why cycling might be better for you - or at least another option! Trend alert: weighted vests. These low-weight vests are all the rage in the midlife/perimenopause space right now. The menopause experts say to wear these babies every day, all day, and for every exercise. The fitness experts say there is a whole lot of problems with wearing a weighted vest for long durations and with certain exercises. I break it all down and go over the most commonly touted studies on bone density and fat loss. I cover some times they definitely aren't a good idea and how to avoid the biggest mistakes if you do choose to use a weighted vest.

Nervous system regulation is all the rage and it is so important to so many symptoms and health conditions. When you have an overactive and highly sensitive system, it might not be enough to take a deep breath or trigger your vagus nerve with singing or cold water. Whether you are cycling and have symptoms or are on HRT and having issues, the ratio of these two hormones can be a real indicator of issues like low progesterone, estrogen dominance or estrogen metabolism issues. You can calculate this ratio from values on your serum testing or urine testing such as the DUTCH test. In this episode, I talk about what this ratio should be, how to calculate it (units matter!), what you can glean from various types of testing (i.e. urine shows you something different than serum, both matter) and what to consider to feel better if your P:E2 ratio is off.
