You DO NOT want to miss this episode! The amazing Kelly Coffey shares her story of weighing over 300 pounds (and some stuff she really LOVED about it), gastric by-pass surgery, addiction (to all the things from bad relationships to booze and beyond) and coming out the other side. Having had her hit-the-wall-fall-on-your-knees breakdown-near-the-brink-of-death wake up call, let this woman talk to you about self-care. It is about more than dieting and hitting the gym. It is about finding something to love just enough to not self-destruct - and how to learn to love a little more and then a little more to keep the care going. You will melt listening to Kelly's voice (seriously, just wait). Your heart will break and it will heal all over again as you hear her journey from self-destruction to self-love. This episode is just soooo good.

We're back with another Q&A this week and as always, you ladies ask some good questions! In this episode we talk about the best way to boost vitamin D levels and why yours may be going up and down - and should ramping up vitamin D include a tanning bed? Should you stick it out low carb if you're trying to heal your gut even if you feel terrible in terms of mood and energy? And if you have hormonal issues do you need to avoid foods like rosemary and garlic? We give you the low down estrogen in your food and the truth about phytoestrogens. And Dr Brooke shares her kindergarten update and Sarah reminds us to read her current favorite book by Pema Chodron, "When Things Fall Apart" because they do don't they? They always do.

This started off as a listener question and turned into a full episode jam packed with everything from overlooked aspects to healing the gut, how long should you really be on a restricted diet, when elimination diets aren’t enough and how this all ties into your unique hormonal imbalances like estrogen dominance, low thyroid, adrenal fatigue and Hashimoto’s. So many women have tried a Whole30, done a series of elimination diets, taken a slew of supplements, worked with several docs and are still struggling to eat without getting bloated, come off a restricted food list without falling apart or somehow feeling worse than they did before. It’s no surprise they are wondering, “What gives??” In this episode we answer this great listener question from Laura and get into it about why your digestion is still a mess; why you haven’t yet heal your leaky gut, IBS, etc.; and why your food sensitivities may not be going away. Be prepared for a bit of a lesson in digestion and immunology and a ton of great take-aways to get you feeling better ASAP.

Today we made history…our first male guest! And it’s only fitting as he is an expert in training women - and one of the reasons Sarah and I even know each other. As sweet as he is strong, it’s the one, the only: Mr. Jim Laird. Jim owns a gym in Lexington, KY and works with women of all ages to get healthy and be capable and strong in their lives. Having faced his own health crisis with Ulcerative Colitis he, like so many of us, knows what it’s like to hit the wall and have to rethink how we do everything from our training, sleep and stress to the constant pushing, pushing until something breaks and even the importance of facing our unhealthy emotions and dealing with our past. Really, really good stuff. In this episode we hear about Jim’s group of female power lifters, the Miss Fits (who are absolutely amazing), we meander through a range of female hormone issues (missing gallbladder anyone??) and Jim gives us his best tips for getting women in their healthiest, best shape…and they may surprise you.

Drum roll please....Melissa Joulwan! Author, blogger, lifter of heavy things, kitchen goddess and all around super cool chick (like did roller derby cool) is our guest and it was one of our favorite episodes to record. We hear Mel's journey from a kid at weight loss camp to cross-fitter to surviving a thyroid cancer scare to finally learning to objectively look in the mirror and think, ya know what? It actually is all good.

Oh my is right! In this episode we discuss whether or not supplements can shrink a uterine fibroid, why thyroids go so wonky during and after pregnancy, the thyroid cholesterol connection and why you're still hearing the go low fat advice for high lipids. We also answer a very juicy question about stress as related to coffee and caffeine (especially if you feel "addicted" to your morning fix).

You know that one of the things we aim to do is talk about the stuff women are a little nervous to ask about like, um, vaginal dryness. But ladies, you are never alone in these funky hormonal issues so we cover that, how big a deal is a borderline thyroid, how to handle hormonal headaches and what we really think of protein supplements.

It's Q&A time again! Sarah and Dr Brooke cover Grave's Disease and answer the question: can you eat your thyroid back to health? We give advice on how to get started with strength training if you're a newbie and revisit the Paleo Thumbs Up Or Thumbs Down episode and go more in depth on the fat plus carbs hormonal equation when going Paleo especially if you have hormonal issues like PCOS or perimenopause. And finally, is the estrogen in beef tallow skin care a good thing if you're post-menopausal or otherwise low estrogen?
This episode answers questions straight from you: our listeners! We cover taking collagen supplements and their effect on cellulite (could they actually make it worse??!!) and answer the question: can going Paleo cause you to lose your period? Our email has been bursting with glowing praise - thank you! One such email is from a long time fan of Sarah's whose wife is suffering with trigger finger. We give some options for treatment and other things to investigate. And last but certainly not least is how to set boundaries, how to do it all and not do a bum job in any area: mom, wife, breadwinner. Hear what Sarah and Dr Brooke had to say to this woman who let's face it, could've been Dr Brooke writing in.

Adrenal “fatigue”…is it even real? Sarah and Dr Brooke certainly know many women that are too tired to get out of bed every morning and even more that are simply to wiped out to do anything more than survive let alone thrive, but do they really have tired adrenals? You're feeling lousy, you've got every symptom on every blog about adrenal fatigue, but how do you really know what’s wrong and how do you fix it? How about when you’ve tried to heal your adrenals, but you still don't feel better? How long does it take? Does it matter which stage you’re in? Wondering if you need DHEA or rhodiola – or both? Sarah and Dr Brooke dig way into this controversial topic and discuss what may be going on beyond your adrenals and stress hormones, why testing and retesting is oh so important, hidden sources of stress, other issues that frequently arise at the same time as adrenal trouble and a few very simple things that always seem to go untreated when it comes to adrenal health. Tune in ladies, this is a great episode and we hope you’ll feel better after listening.

In this episode, Sarah and Dr Brooke welcome physical therapist and women’s health expert, Brianne Grogan. Women need to understand, celebrate and be able to comfortably talk about their amazing, complex female body as some funky stuff can happen postpartum or from training inappropriately. Spoiler Alert: it’s never normal or commendable to pee when you exercise. Learn about all aspects of abdominal separation (diastasis recti) and what actually makes up your pelvic floor and core as well as how you can make yours stronger. Sidestep common exercise mistakes made after giving birth or anytime your core, pelvic floor or alignment is off. We talk up close and personal about our ladybits after having babies, abdominal wraps and waist trainers, and why we need to treat birth as a trauma (albeit a beautiful one) to a woman’s body. Some intimate topics are broached – like Dr Brooke’s uterine prolapse – and some less conventional stuff come up like chakras and we go there with all of it. And after listening to this episode, if you see Sarah or Dr Brooke circling their hips at the grocery store, you’ll know why.

Parenting, is there anything harder? As mothers we're judged on everything from what we feed our kids to where we send them to school. We are under the microscope for our choices on how to nurture, discipline and guide our children. Like most mothers, both Sarah and Dr Brooke have been praised and criticized for the choices they've made with their families. In this episode we pull the curtain way back and show you exactly what is important to use when it comes to our kids. With Sarah homeschooling her boys in Northern California and Dr Brooke raising her girls in New York City we have some shared perspectives but very different experiences - and we on totally different ends of the mothering experience. Sarah has been a mother for twenty years and Dr Brooke is pretty much at the starting gate with two toddlers. And maybe, just maybe, there will be an arranged marriage between Sarah's youngest and Dr Brooke's oldest...stay tuned.

In this episode, Dr Brooke and Sarah are joined by the lovely, strong Molly Galbraith. We talk about women and strength training, debunk a few myths and help you sidestep common mistakes we all see women making with their training. But as you'll quickly see what the three of us really get fired up about is helping women not fall prey to disempowering messages by the media and the multi-billion dollar weight loss industry which Molly's organization, Girls Gone Strong, believes preys on women's insecurities for profit. On this show we discuss the importance of each woman using fitness to be more instead of less, why every woman needs to define what is right for her and her her body and how to marry her goals of lifestyle, health, performance and aesthetics without spending hours in the gym or wrecking her hormones. We offer advice on crafting better messages for yourself and your children around body image, exercise and self-care. Molly talks about her viral bikini photo from earlier this year and the shocking fact that it was international news that a woman was content and happy with her body.
