On the whole, we know exercise is helpful to balance blood sugar. However, for those of you that feel badly after exercise or those of you that get a strange reading on your CGM (continuous glucose monitor) after a workout I wanted to clear up any confusion as to what’s happening and why. In this episode I also cover what types of training cause various types of blood sugar highs and lows, what’s a problem and what’s not as well as how to adjust if you’re not feeling great after a workout or running out of energy and suspect it’s your blood sugar that’s the cause.

With more and more of my patients testing positive for mold derived mycotoxins in my practice, I wanted to welcome back to the show environmental professional Michael Schrantz to answer specific questions about how to take the next steps. When we find mycotoxins on a urine test in my practice, the next step is trying to figure out where the mold is coming from in the patient’s environment. I was lucky enough to stumble upon Britt’s work on Instagram and I’m so glad I did because after I devoured her book (The Science of Stuck, Breaking Through Inertia to Find Your Path Forward) in a day, I asked her to be on the show! We’ve all felt stuck at one time or another and it can leave us asking disempowering questions like “what's wrong with me” or “why can’t I do what I need to do” that leave us more stuck and anxious than we already were! In this episode, Britt (a licensed neuropsychotherapist) helps us ask the right questions to produce forward progress, get moving with “micro-yeses” and to honor and understand ourselves better - turns out we may be stuck because somehow we feel it’s the safe place to be. I shared my story of being super stuck about a year ago and how I fell precisely into this trap of doing a lot of the wrong things to get unstuck and how I’m using these tools to keep moving forward.

This is a dicey episode for sure and I’m certain it will have a lot of you rethinking your supplement regimen. Iodine is most often used to improve thyroid or breast health but it’s important to understand the whole story about how these recommendations came about and why more iodine can actually be bad for both. 

Iodine is an essential nutrient that we absolutely need for thyroid function as well as other systems in our bodies, HOWEVER, it’s a Golidlock’s nutrient if there ever was one. When you look at how our bodies manage iodine and what our actual need for this unique trace mineral is you can see that we need to be a bit more careful with higher doses of iodine. With Marth’s recent Sports Illustrated cover, the internet is ablaze with opinions on women, beauty standards and how we should look in a bathing suit in our 80s. Much of this unrealistic standard of beauty is not now, like not new at all, but what was interesting to me is that most of the comments about this cover shoot were from women. Whether you’re in the “she looks amazing for her age” camp or the “this is absurd, no woman in their 80s would look like this without a lot of money and intervention” camp, this episode will give you a LOT more to think about.  

Aging is a dicey subject for women. We feel like we are obligated to look as young as possible for as long as possible and we are also wondering where our line in the sand is about aging naturally: a little botox but not going under the knife? Dying our hair but no fillers? There is more to aging than deciding if we do it au natural or not and I think the most important thing about this pic of Martha is what it stirs up in us- and that can give us a whole lot of insight into what we need to unpack to actually “age gracefully”.
