Dr. Brooke Show

Amidst polarizing, conflicting, and often alarming health and hormone information, The Dr Brooke Show is a voice of sanity where a sensible and nuanced take is honored. Black-and-white thinking, complex daily routines, and hormone advice that get you lost in minutia are not welcome here, but you are. With your host Dr Brooke Kalanick, functional medicine doctor and female hormone expert, you’ll sift through the nonsense and get to what matters most for your hormones and your happiness. Deep dive with expert interviews as well as Dr. Brooke’s solo episodes will give you the solutions you need. Dr Brooke is a speaker, author, and unlike most online experts: still a doc in full-time practice working with real women every day. Like you, she is navigating the moving target that is female hormones through the years and trying to live life more like interval training vs. a marathon: work hard but also recover, learning when to have more grit or when to have more grace. Oh, and also trying not to give her kids too much to talk about in therapy someday. Her promise to you is at least one actionable takeaway from each episode to help you BETTER today. New episodes every Tuesday because a fresh take doesn’t have to happen on a Monday. Any day, any moment is a chance to heal a bit, love ourselves more, make a better choice, and just maybe change our lives. If this week’s topic isn’t for you, check past episodes and stay tuned for next week as a lot of ground is covered on this show! Whether you are 20 or 60, you deserve to understand how your hormones work and how you can feel your best.

She’s back and it’s not hard to see why she’s a fav guest of the show! Dr Krista Scott-Dixon of Stumptuous.com and Precision Nutrition has a new book that poses an interesting question: Why Me Want Eat? What drives us to eat certain things and why do we struggle to change certain food related behaviors?

While not all of us have experienced full blown, clinical eating disorders we are all members in one way or another of the Food & Eating & Body Image Issues Club. KSD explains why it’s not always easy to give up our membership card – even if we want to. There’s comfort, certainty and even a clinging to  our issues, our “stuff” and these are darn good reasons not to change. She points out that our stuff doesn’t always come at the hand of some Big T -  big trauma like abuse, injury or major loss. Many of us haven’t suffered a huge trauma but rather have dealt with the constant, small, emotional papercuts of life.   Either way, food, body image and exercise “stuff” is prevalent and Krista’s advice is always sound, slightly humorous and if followed allows us all to make change easier and make it stick.  We adore her, tune in to see why.

This episode touched on so many topics we’ve covered before - gut health, stress, ancestral eating - but never before have we done a deep dive into how all this affects our oral health. Holistic and functional dentist, TEDX speaker, About.com and MindBodyGreen contributor, Dr Steven Lin joins us with his amazing Aussie accent and shared some jaw dropping (pun intended) info on what we can do to have healthier gums and straighter, whiter teeth – and our kids too! We asked him to school us on mouth taping, toothpaste, canker sores and whether or not you can actually heal a cavity with a good Paleo diet. Fascinating stuff.

Learn more about Dr Linn here and look for his new book The Dental Diet out January 2018.

Great questions today! We answered a question that sooooo many women ask us about: fruit - yah or nah? We covered this from every angle: does it work for you, what your fruit cravings mean and how you utilize the fiber found in fruit. This also brought up the questions: is Paleo meant to be low carb? And how healthy are "natural sugars"? This show also dove deep into a reader's question on what to expect in terms of “should her progress be happening quicker”, inferno hot Pilates and what we mean when we say "strength training". Lastly we covered the Pill's impact on thyroid meds and talked all about acne including its causes and how you find your root cause.

We’ve covered what to eat for pretty much every hormone in your body thus far on this podcast but today we take a deep dive into food from a totally different angle. We eat food for a thousand different reasons beyond energy or even convenience and whether you’re experiencing full on binges or just find yourself comforting or rewarding with food often this episode is for you! Tricia shares her own story with emotional eating and her history of being overweight and how no amount of dieting or exercising fixed it because that wasn’t her root cause. She got to the bottom of why she overate and healed her deep down stuff and thus healed her relationship with food.

Tricia shares what she’s found in 30 years of doing this work to be the causes of emotional eating and why we turn to food: pain killer, escaping fear and punishment. Fascinating, especially that last one as so often we think of food as a treat or a reward. Great tools in this show that will help us all have a healthier relationship with food. Learn more about Tricia here.
