As a parent, children growing up is oh so bittersweet. I am just now starting to adjust to the idea that I’m the mother of kids that aren’t babies or toddlers anymore. While my kiddos are not yet flying the nest, many of you have expressed anxiety and sadness about the upcoming transition for your parenting to kiddos leaving the house. Recently a study - and subsequent headlines - came out saying that we should no longer be testing vitamin D levels or supplementing with vitamin D. On the heels of the last episode on breakfast, I put together and entire episode on morning routines. So much of what you read about morning routines are very complex, specific and time consuming leaving most of us feeling like we fail before we even get our day started. Not at all how we should feel going into our day! And in the wellness space your morning to do list is no better: light exposure, meditate, cold plunge, exercise, fasting, delaying caffeine, etc.

I get this question daily: Dr Brooke, what are good breakfast options? Given that breakfast sets the nutritional tone and hormonal balance for the day, the old adage that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” does hold some weight. Some of the biggest issues for women include getting adequate protein to not perturb insulin and blood sugar for the day and get a jump on that 1g per kg body weight of protein goal for the day; as well as needing quick options and also how to deal with low appetite (particularly for protein) upon waking that can be due to cortisol, blood sugar or inflammation.
This episode will help you understand why this meal needs to be optimized for your hormones, some easy options and of course, what I do too to make this happen in my busy life. Hopefully by the end of this episode you’ll think of breakfast as less “special” with its unique foods and have some easy ideas to make your first meal of the day a great one.

There are many reasons why you aren’t able to recover between workouts and lacking the steam to keep at it with any consistency. I’m just gonna come right out and say it: I stink at accepting help from others. I also know, I’m not alone in that! It can bring up feelings of guilt that we can’t do it all ourselves, an uncomfortable sense of “I don’t deserve help” or “I don’t want to put anyone out” or even “I don’t want to owe anyone anything".
However, when we don’t accept help from others we are furthering our mistrust that we can be cared for by others safely and we are denying those that love us the chance to boost their oxytocin and give to us. In the first episode we covered the basics of what food allergy vs. sensitivity means when it comes to your immune system. I get asked this question daily, both in my practice and in my online community. It’s a great question because it seems like the perfect answer to alleviate digestive symptoms, skin troubles, low energy, blood sugar and hormone problems right? Just take a test and tell me what to eat! I get it and they can be really helpful BUT there are a ton of problems with these tests.
You need to know what type of reaction you’re actually testing (allergy vs. sensitivity), the labs need to be using the proper methodology (hint: most of them are not), they can’t test for every type of food reaction (i.e.bloating can be caused by a gut infection, low HCL or a food sensitivity and only one of those will show up on a test) AND you need to understand where food sensitivities fit in your overall treatment plan. Food Issues do cause a host of inflammatory issues but they are often a symptom and not a root cause so just “getting your food sensitivities” checked and get off that food forever isn’t usually the best approach.
