That stack of papers to file, the list of phone calls to make, the light bulb that needs to be changed, that conversation you’ve had in your head a hundred times but are avoiding having in person, that list of things you need to get to but it just seems to awful you keep pretending it will go away - did you know those are impacting your brain and your hormones?

Our brain will continue to keep these undone tasks as an “open loop” and sucking up your mental energy and willpower until it’s done. Draining dopamine which can certainly impact you motivation to workout and have you craving sugar and things that don’t work well for you. As well your cortisol will be on the rise and impacting your anxiety, sleep and of course, your other hormones like progesterone and thyroid.

 

I talk about how this all works in your brain and some strategies to clear your desk, handle that mental clutter and keep it from getting built up again in the future to decrease your overwhelm and make your hormones a bit happier.

This is the final show of my three part series on food sensitivity testing where I answer your questions on these tests. If you want to know what these tests can and can't tell you and what labs and methodologies to use and which to avoid be sure to listen to parts 1 and 2. In this episode I am answering questions from our Facebook group that cover when to do an elimination diet vs. getting testing, when to see an allergist for testing vs. more functional medicine sensitivity testing, what symptoms like bloating may be telling you (hint: that can be a food sensitivity but can be a whole lot of other things too and so other testing or strategies may be better), when you should retest and much more!

This episode is the second of a three part series on making sense of food sensitivity testing. In the first episode we covered the basics of what food allergy vs. sensitivity means when it comes to your immune system. In this episode I dive into the types of testing available to you and what they are actually testing for. I get asked this question daily, both in my practice and in my online community. It’s a great question because it seems like the perfect answer to alleviate digestive symptoms, skin troubles, low energy, blood sugar and hormone problems right? Just take a test and tell me what to eat! I get it and they can be really helpful BUT there are a ton of problems with these tests. 

 

You need to know what type of reaction you’re actually testing (allergy vs. sensitivity), the labs need to be using the proper methodology (hint: most of them are not), they can’t test for every type of food reaction (i.e.bloating can be caused by a gut infection, low HCL or a food sensitivity and only one of those will show up on a test) AND you need to understand where food sensitivities fit in your overall treatment plan. Food Issues do cause a host of inflammatory issues but they are often a symptom and not a root cause so just “getting your food sensitivities” checked and get off that food forever isn’t usually the best approach.
