Lucky you! Here is a bonus podcast that is an audio recording of a webinar I did about how inflammation messes up our hormones. Ladies, this is the biggest deal. Inflammation affects hormone effects at the genetic level so you can have enough hormone around but it doesn’t create the desired effect. Read: normal lab tests but you still feel like garbage. Let alone if you have low hormone levels (i.e. testosterone, estrogen, thyroid, etc.) plus inflammation. Yikes right?
I dive into how this all works in terms of the impact of inflammation on your hormones ranging from cortisol to thyroid to insulin, as well as estrogen and progesterone. Special attention is paid to inflammation for women with PCOS. We have it rough, real rough.  Not only do we have smoldering, low levels of inflammation as a baseline with PCOS but we get so easily locked into chronic inflammation. This is actually a root cause of PCOS and it won’t be solved by just eating less carbs.  Inflammation affects all other hormone imbalances in PCOS and it is also made worse by most PCOS related hormone issues like high androgens and insulin resistance. Many vicious cycles in this inflammatory mess.

BUT when you understand this unique interplay, you can take great strides to better balance your female hormones by addressing inflammation. If you feel you’ve tried everything this episode is for you. If you feel confused by PCOS this episode is for you. If you have female hormones and live in the Western World, this is for you!

If you’d like to watch the webinar replay with slides to accompany this audio, you can do that here.

If you’d like to get into the Empowered PCOS Program live with Dr Brooke you have ONLY until SUNDAY Sept 24th! This is perhaps our most lovely episode yet. We had the beautiful Dr Mariza Snyder on to talk about how to use essential oils from both a clinical and practical perspective. Dr Mariza is a Functional Medicine Physician with a specialty in women’s hormones and author of the Smart Mom’s Guide To Essential Oils – but rest assured ladies, this book is for all women not just the mamas!

We got  answers to your burning questions about essentials oils: what’s safe when it comes to putting them in your mouth and on your skin, how to use them with children and this gem: is it better to eat them or breath them in?  You’ll even get the inside scoop on Dr Mariza’s favorite, never leave home without them, what she calls the Swiss Army Knife of Essential Oils combo. You will come away with actionable steps that you can use to enhance your wellness rituals as well as have one more tool in your toolbox of natural remedies.

Answering your questions in this show including how big a deal is it not to get a period after coming off the birth control pill and why your SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) can stay elevated for years after taking the pill creating low free, active sex hormones across the board. We also had a great questions about drinking and how that correlates directly to low dopamine and sugar cravings. This is one reason why a Paleo, low carb, low sugar diet can be so helpful. And what do you do when some members of your family need to abstain from booze and sugar, but the rest need a little gluten free treat on occasion? Finally: low free testosterone a case of too many hormones or too little? While low testosterone in women is often due to stress or inflammation it can also be due to elevated SHBG. We dive into the mechanism of having low free testosterone and a high SHBG (this little protein was the star of the show!). This can be due to low insulin as a result of a low carb diet or hormone excess of some type (estrogen dominance, post pill, taking supplemental DHEA, etc.) but it’s almost always just seen as a deficiency. It’s important to see the big picture here rather than jumping to testosterone replacement. Good stuff in this show, don’t miss it!

Functional neurologist and guest of The Dr Oz Show, the lovely Trupti Gokani, MD joins us in this episode and it was amazing. Her unique blend of Ayurveda, Functional Medicine and neurology gives such cool insights into common issues so many of us suffer with including poor sleep, headaches, waning memory, anxiety and brain fog.

Neurological prescriptions are serious medications in most cases so we loved these alternative options for pain and brain health including when we may need to eat warm vs. cold foods, how anxiety can be the result of simple nutrient depletion and why we should all have a living, green plant by our computer.

Grab your copy of Dr. Gokani’s book The Mysterious Mind for more info on her beautiful blend of ancient healing and modern science.

First, thank you all so much for your support after last week’s tell all episode – we love you guys! In this episode we’re answering your questions which are always so good! We tackled a very big problem: what to do when you want to eat healthier and you want your family to eat healthier but they aren’t interested OR you and your partner are not on the same page when it comes to feeding your kids. This can be so hard and it takes time to get everyone on the same page but we offer several tools for tackling this problem that’s so worth solving. What’s more important than your health and the health of your family?!?

We also cover the benefits of testosterone as well as the downside to too much, particularly for women with PCOS who suffer with hypersensitivity to androgens as well as androgen excess. Testosterone certainly has benefits for healing, libido and strength but it’s also a great example of getting too much of a good thing. Finally give some great tips for choosing effective nutritional supplements, our favorite brands and why you shouldn’t be taking the same supplement regimen for an extended period of time.

Interested in getting early access to Dr Brooke’s PCOS program? Get more info and nab your spot on the waitlist here.

You’re sitting down right? As we’ve eluded to in the past few months there’s a lot going on over here! Professionally things are amazing with the book coming out and all and we’ve had so much support for our work and this podcast lately, it’s been just incredible! Thank you.

But as life tends to go, sometimes when one area is going great things can fall apart in another.

When we started working together we vowed to be the #antiguru and keep it very real for you. Yes we are the experts but we are also women just like you. We struggle, we fall down, we get up, we grow. We see no point it putting on a facade that everything is always perfect for us all the time – even if it looks that way on Instagram.

We are real women just like you – wives, mothers, business owners, sisters, friends and more. Thanks to our expertise we have a lot tools to handle life, our fitness and our health but sometimes things in our world get real messy too. Like you we want to run away from that, avoid it, distract ourselves and keep on truckin’. It’s human, it’s normal but we’ve both been very intentional about sitting with the pain, marinating in the hot water as we say in order to learn and grow from these tough times so that we can share our insights and new tools with you.

We can’t do that if we don’t share with you exactly what’s been going on, how we’ve messed it up, what’s working and what’s not. So this episode is a pull back of the ol’ curtain. In it we are raw and vulnerable and trust that our best service to you all is to show up imperfectly real and 100% honest during this messy time.

In this show we talk about how our thinking on self-care has evolved given recent events and what we think are the most important aspects of this key concept that has been boiled down to massages and manicures. We talk about how thinking positive may not always been the best way to learn the lesson and we share our fears and worries about our health and our relationships.

Grab a cup of tea or glass of wine and listen in, it’s about to get real.

You can tell by that title that we were pretty giddy about this topic right? Dr Tyna Moore, ND, DC joins us in this episode where we discuss the benefits of weight training from a totally different angle. We are big fans of the barbell as you know thanks to what it does for our capability, bone health, confidence and fat loss. We love that the weights have been proven to increase our longevity, improve insulin sensitivity and increase our ability to be stronger on this journey called life. But did you know also that weight training is anti-inflammatory? And anti-aging?

We got into the science behind why muscle is so darn amazing including its direct impact on myokines, a special cytokine released from muscles (think of cytokines as the hormones of the immune system) which help modulate our immune systems, lower inflammation and even improve brain health. Strength training also helps repair and regenerate mitochondria (the cell’s powerhouse) and dysfunctional, sad mitochondria are a hallmark of aging. It just keeps getting better, huh?

Muscle is the seat of insulin sensitivity which is a key to both disease prevention and fat loss; is a hotspot of hormonal health for thyroid, testosterone, cortisol and growth hormone and turns out it also keeps you young! Hear a whole bunch of new reasons to love the iron, don’t miss this show!  Learn more about chiropractic and naturopathic doc the amazing Tyna Moore right here.

Ladies, you’ve sent us a ton of questions about ketogenic diets ranging from how to keto to who should keto to why keto at all. While we’ve touched on it in other episodes we wanted to bring you The Man – Mr. Mike Mutzel. If you don’t know Mike from his popular podcast and Youtube channel High Intensity Health you’ll want to check him out! A functional medicine practitioner and Masters in Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport, Mike takes a very natural, holistic approach to all of his advice – including keto.

In this episode we covered testing – how most people using urine strips are testing their keto state wrong, why ketogenic diets can be hugely beneficial for lowering inflammation and brain health as well as how to use blood glucose monitor to get an idea of how fat adapted you are. Truly loved this last point as we get soooooo many questions about why someone might not be burning as much fat as they’d like or suspect they should be given a low carb, higher fat diet when all the gurus say they should be “fat adapted” by now.

Mike has a great book called The Belly Fat Effect which digs in deep to gut health, hormones and body fat. And again, catch up with him on his site High Intensity Health to learn a ton! And he really is also just the smartest, sweetest guy and we will definitely have him back!

Listen up ladies it’s about to get good! We get so many questions about sex drive and libido that we went straight to THE expert on this issue,  OBGYN Dr Anna Cabeca. We dug deep into this topic from all angles including how sex drive and libido change throughout a woman’s lifespan and life circumstances ranging from childbirth, clearing age 35 and of course menopause. Woman’s hormones are so easily affected by stress and our current crazy environment of endocrine disruptors that it’s easy for sex drive to take a dive. And so often it’s a symptom we think can wait “until we have time” or “until life calms down” but it puts such a strain on our sense of self, our comfort with our bodies and of course our relationship.

We covered testing you need to get to the “why” behind your low libido and hint: the first test Dr Cabeca and Dr Brooke recommend is not testosterone! Dr Cabeca talks about both the primary and secondary libido mechanisms we all have and why secondary is actually more important for women. And she shares why a woman’s orgasm is like a game of Candyland. Trust us, you’ll want to have a notebook handy for this episode!

We answered just three questions in this episode but they were seriously super-sized and jam packed with details! We talked about chicory, quinoa and CRP (what to do if it’s elevated) and sussed out the differences between functional and conventional thyroid lab ranges so you can know if you’re really low or normal thyroid. Discussed HPA axis dysregulation and the impact cortisol problems and stress have on fertility and covered several aspects of estrogen dominance including whether or not supplements to help with estrogen metabolism can lower estrogen too much. Finally, a favorite topic of Dr Brooke’s: the downside to long term DHEA supplementation. And finally within the DHEA question we covered several causes of swelling in hands and feet. These were great questions ladies, keep them coming!

She’s back and it’s not hard to see why she’s a fav guest of the show! Dr Krista Scott-Dixon of Stumptuous.com and Precision Nutrition has a new book that poses an interesting question: Why Me Want Eat? What drives us to eat certain things and why do we struggle to change certain food related behaviors?

While not all of us have experienced full blown, clinical eating disorders we are all members in one way or another of the Food & Eating & Body Image Issues Club. KSD explains why it’s not always easy to give up our membership card – even if we want to. There’s comfort, certainty and even a clinging to  our issues, our “stuff” and these are darn good reasons not to change. She points out that our stuff doesn’t always come at the hand of some Big T -  big trauma like abuse, injury or major loss. Many of us haven’t suffered a huge trauma but rather have dealt with the constant, small, emotional papercuts of life.   Either way, food, body image and exercise “stuff” is prevalent and Krista’s advice is always sound, slightly humorous and if followed allows us all to make change easier and make it stick.  We adore her, tune in to see why.

Jun 21, 2017

This episode touched on so many topics we’ve covered before - gut health, stress, ancestral eating - but never before have we done a deep dive into how all this affects our oral health. Holistic and functional dentist, TEDX speaker, About.com and MindBodyGreen contributor, Dr Steven Lin joins us with his amazing Aussie accent and shared some jaw dropping (pun intended) info on what we can do to have healthier gums and straighter, whiter teeth – and our kids too! We asked him to school us on mouth taping, toothpaste, canker sores and whether or not you can actually heal a cavity with a good Paleo diet. Fascinating stuff.

Learn more about Dr Linn here and look for his new book The Dental Diet out January 2018.

Great questions today! We answered a question that sooooo many women ask us about: fruit - yah or nah? We covered this from every angle: does it work for you, what your fruit cravings mean and how you utilize the fiber found in fruit. This also brought up the questions: is Paleo meant to be low carb? And how healthy are "natural sugars"? This show also dove deep into a reader's question on what to expect in terms of “should her progress be happening quicker”, inferno hot Pilates and what we mean when we say "strength training". Lastly we covered the Pill's impact on thyroid meds and talked all about acne including its causes and how you find your root cause.

Jun 7, 2017

We’ve covered what to eat for pretty much every hormone in your body thus far on this podcast but today we take a deep dive into food from a totally different angle. We eat food for a thousand different reasons beyond energy or even convenience and whether you’re experiencing full on binges or just find yourself comforting or rewarding with food often this episode is for you! Tricia shares her own story with emotional eating and her history of being overweight and how no amount of dieting or exercising fixed it because that wasn’t her root cause. She got to the bottom of why she overate and healed her deep down stuff and thus healed her relationship with food.

Tricia shares what she’s found in 30 years of doing this work to be the causes of emotional eating and why we turn to food: pain killer, escaping fear and punishment. Fascinating, especially that last one as so often we think of food as a treat or a reward. Great tools in this show that will help us all have a healthier relationship with food. Learn more about Tricia here.

May 31, 2017

Back today with a Q&A! We get sooooo many questions about birth control and whether they are “good or bad” for you. We dig in to the risks (i.e. stroke, clotting, inflammation, oxidative stress, nutrient deficiencies) and the impact on other hormones (progesterone, thyroid, gut health, ghrelin, etc.) and how you can know what’s best for you. As always, no judgement from us AT ALL! We aim in this show to give you all the options and talk about the stuff your prescriber often doesn’t as well as charge all of our listeners with educating young girls about their options.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the Pill in particular is that almost 60% of women are NOT using it solely for contraception but to manage other issues such as acne, heavy bleeding, irregular periods, PMS mood issues or headaches and we want you to know you have more options than the Pill! And in the case of these non-contraception issues the options are BETTER as the Pill will not treat any part of the underlying cause (great at symptom management in many cases but not the cause) and those issues are still there and often times worse after coming off the Pill.  Juicy conversation for sure! We also field a “what do I do when my kitchen is being renovated and I can’t cook for 3 months?” questions and how to start to wean a reluctant toddler.

Eeek! This was an informative episode to say the least but your palms may get a little sweaty listening to our guest discuss the impacts of EMFs or electromagnetic frequencies that are buzzing around all of us all the time. We discussed common sources of EMFs in our homes and workplaces, some very simple strategies to decrease their impact and we pondered what makes some of us more sensitive than others to these little buggers.

Dr Libby Darnell was our guest and she has developed an incredible expertise on this subject after fighting her own battle to win back her health that was deteriorating in part to her sensitivity to EMFs. This was fascinating information and it’s stuff so many of us are unaware of! Are EMFs driving us all to an early grave? Probably not, but they are affecting us and it’s something we can take actionable, doable steps towards decreasing to optimize our health and certainly something we may want to think of in chronic illnesses that don’t seem to be getting better.

So tune in and learn about grounding or earthing, why you shouldn’t work on a plugged in laptop or sleep next to a plugged in smart phone, safer travel tips, what the heck a Stetzer meter is and why you may want to stand on a piece of tinfoil for a minute after you run on the treadmill.  Seriously fascinating. Like always, knowing this stuff can easily freak us out! But this is the world we live in, we can’t possibly escape this entirely so you do as much as you can as often as you can. That’s how you “be better”.

Learn more about Dr Libby Darnell here and grab her free guide with 10 steps you can do to keep you and your family safe from EMFs. Such great info and easy to employ all of these without moving to a remote mountain village away from civilization!

No sugar coating in this episode, but it will change your life. So there’s that.

Change…hard right? We say we want X, Y or Z and have a thousand and one reasons why we can’t pull it off. We have excuses for days and a list of people and circumstances to blame: we have kids, our partner isn’t supportive, not enough time, not enough money, we’re too old, and on and on it goes. It’s always something or someone else that’s holding us back right? Well, today’s guest life coach, founder of the Handel Method and author of a new book, Lauren Zander is here to say, “Actually, maybe it’s you.”

Guess what: it is. And it’s us too. This is the human condition, the light and the dark, the good and the bad. When we face that, get honest, get brave enough to take responsibility for what we want and what’s not working in our lives, anything is possible. Lauren has such a unique approach and touches on all the stuff we are too scared to talk about: our heartfelt dreams, dishonesty (we are all a bunch of liars by the way, who knew??), getting clean with our parents and our past, tuning in to the crazy voices we listen to in our head and why we need to motivate with promises vs. rewards (this is revolutionary!). Grab her new book here, learn more about Lauren here and by all means drop everything and listen to this episode! We can’t wait to hear what changes for you.

We were due for a Q&A ladies and today's the day! We covered a question that comes in to us a hundred different ways: what testing should you get to assess your hormones? So we walked through the difference between blood/serum, saliva and urine testing, the pros and cons, accuracy and the most important part: is that test evaluating what you really need to know about? There was also a great question about spotting with ovulation so we gave a quick tutorial on interpreting menses and hormone related bleeding as well as reminding you all to always look past the ovaries when thinking about an estrogen-progesterone problem by evaluating stress, sleep, diet, and of course thyroid.  Finally we tackled a big, big question on lowering cholesterol without statin medications. Is a swap for a more natural cholesterol lowering supplement the way to go? Or is it part of a much bigger issue?

In this episode we have the Paleo Powerhouse behind Harder To Kill Radio and Stupid Easy Paleo, Ms. Steph Gaudreau.  Having long followed Steph’s fabulous recipes and generally bad-assery on her blog and social media, it was a treat to have her on the show talking about strength in a bigger sense including physical, mental and spiritual.  She is putting this message out into the world in a big, big way with her upcoming Women’s Strength Summit.  This is the second online event Steph’s done to pull together top experts not only on strength and fitness but also on empowerment, mindset and women’s health.  Join her for the summit here.

We also touched on a little something that happened on Instagram last weekend: body shaming. A post Steph put up of herself in the gym garnered some criticism of her own body and she bravely took the opportunity to have a tough conversation. You can read all about it on her blog but tune in here as well and hear what all three of us had to say about strength, criticism, owning your power and the responsibility we all have to help and inspire each other. In short, don’t miss this one!

Whoa mama are we ever still riding high after our three day retreat in Chico, CA last weekend! We not only finally got to be in the same state but the same house and share the same stage together but most importantly we got to be live, in person with YOU the women this podcast was for.  It was a weekend full of knowledge, connection and perspective shifts spent with our amazing speakers and the incredible women who attended. We are all dipping our toes into the hot water and getting out of our comfort zone, ya know, where all the growth happens, where it’s a bit messy and painful but of course worth it.

In this episode we recap the event for those who couldn’t be there and we share our opening talk: The 5 Pillars To A Bigger Better Life. This talk was born out of the need to help women have more energy and to sort out their health so they can be happier, to  set their priorities in a way that is in line with their true values and purpose and to finding their joy and live big.

You asked and we answered! In today’s Q&A we talked about getting pregnant while you’re breastfeeding (with a caveat for women with PCOS), taking cold showers for fat loss and wandered through all aspects of taking fish oil.

A theme today was doing stuff you hate for the sake of health or fat loss - is it worth it? Is there a better way? And how to take big picture information like a study on fish oil and apply that to your daily choices of what to eat and vitamins to take.

Few spots available for our retreat and it’s not too late to join us! Get more information at www.sarahfragoso.com or www.betterbydrbrooke.com.
